The Memorial Room, Holocaust Museum Houston--- 1993-1996
Patricia Moss-Vreeland and Robert Moss-Vreeland were National Winners of Commission for the "Memorial Room", Holocaust Museum Houston, TX, a nationwide invitation competition of anonymously submitted designs. The artists selected Houston's Murphy Mears Architects for the room's architectural structure. The Memorial Room", a permanent installation, welcomes all visitors to the museum to reflect upon the events of the Holocaust and the universality of loss, and find contemplation and solace through the art and design.
"Like the Rothko Chapel, this is a space in which art serves as a conduit for private meditation. The works of art do not preach or console. Instead, they shape a tranquil environment where the visitor may seek solace."
Houston Chronicle: Patricia C. Johnson 1996 : Where Art Confronts Evil
The "Memorial Room" was awarded the 1997 American Institute of Architects Honor Award in Design, the 1997 International Spectrum Award in Ceramic Tile Design for the "Wall of Tears", and the 1996 American Society of Interior Design Gulf States Award. The Memorial Room was the focus of a PBS special, "The Art of the Memorial Room".
