Cook Eat Remember: A Memory Potluck Supper
Art and Science
Patricia Moss-Vreeland has expanded her artistic practice by creating collaborative and participatory public events dealing with memory and the senses and memory and societal issues, fusing the arts, science, history, and language. Her curated event for the Community Table at the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, Cook- Eat- Remember: A Memory Potluck, she partnered with Dr. Marcia Pelchat, and the Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia, to illuminate the numerous connections that interlace the art and science of smell, taste and memory.
Food connects us all. Diversity of flavors suggests where we come from. Participants were invited to contribute a treasured family recipe or remembrance from another time, celebrating food and our sensory connections to memory. They enjoyed dishes and the related personal stories, histories and recollections from others, building new memories and community at this occasion, and creating a larger memory of place and the individual.
For DesignPhiladelphia 2015, held at the Center for Architecture, she curated the second in her series of Cook Eat Remember, and partnered with Chef Lynn Buono of Feast Your Eyes Catering and The Philadelphia Women’s Culinary Guild for an evening of memory potluck! Trombonist/ composer Dan Blacksberg added music to create a full picture of our senses.
The third in her series was held at Rodeph Shalom, Philadelphia, 2017. Moss-Vreeland continues to mix groups of people, places, and venues for this program, engaging each participant to find meaning in conversation by sharing food and memory.
